Christmas 2024 is fast approaching and the first ideas for possible Christmas presents are already being considered. What about drones as a Christmas present? Are drones suitable as a Christmas present? In this article, we summarise the pros and cons and which drones are suitable.

Are drones suitable as a Christmas present?

This is certainly not one of those questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. Nevertheless, we would like to give you a little help if you are thinking about giving a drone as a Christmas present.

To do this, we’ll give some thought to who would be happy to receive a drone as a gift, which drones are suitable and what you should actually consider when giving such a gift.

Advantages of drones as a Christmas gift

  • Good and affordable models available
  • Numerous instructions make it easy to get started
  • EU drone regulation provides largely standardised rules for the entire EU
  • New perspectives from the air enable fascinating shots for everyone
  • High fun factor

Disadvantages of drones as a Christmas present

Who do you give a drone to?

Before we look at possible drones as a Christmas gift, let’s consider who would be a suitable recipient.

There are certainly certain people who are more excited about a drone than others. For example, people who have a fundamental interest in technology, photography or filmmaking. For them, a drone can be a fun hobby or even serve as another tool for their work.

Another target group is children, who you want to introduce to the subject or simply give them a nice toy.

While we are talking about drones for beginners of a slightly better kind and beyond for the former group, we will be focussing on inexpensive models without a camera and lots of technology for children. After all, the (financial) damage should be kept to a minimum if the little flying companion deviates from the planned flight path.

Of course, depending on the age of the child and their interests, the models in the first group can also be used.

A tip: If the recipient has no previous experience with drones, models weighing less than 250g are particularly suitable. These benefit from less strict laws on flying throughout the EU. Details can be found in our article Drone under 250g: rules and laws.

Selected drones for Christmas 2024

DJI Neo

DJI only launched its smallest and most affordable drone model on the market this year with the Neo. If you’re not too demanding when it comes to technology and still want a lot for your money, you should take a closer look at the Neo as a Christmas present.

It weighs less than 150g, can be controlled with a smartphone (optionally also with a separately available remote control), recently even offers support for flying with video goggles and generally provides a variety of fun functions.

DJI Mini 4K

The DJI Mini 4K also makes a good Christmas present. It delivers more performance than the DJI Neo and is at the lower end of DJI’s well-known Mini series. It offers a very good compromise between price and performance in the entry-level range.

DJI Mini 4 Pro

If you’re prepared to dig deeper into your pocket, the Mini 4 Pro is a great way to up the technical ante and give away what is currently probably the best drone under 250g. It is suitable for more demanding hobby pilots who want to benefit from the less stringent drone laws for drones under 250g.

DJI Avata 2

The DJI Avata 2 is a very fun drone that is also particularly suitable for indoor flights. The special thing about the drone is that it is controlled via video goggles, giving you a unique flying experience from the drone’s perspective. However, the complete package comes at a price.

DJI Mavic 3 Series

If you’re looking for something more expensive, it’s worth taking a look at the current Mavic 3 models. However, they are already aimed at more professional drone pilots – or those with a looser wallet.

Holy Stone HS360S

Away from DJI’s dominance, the Holy Stone HS360S is very popular on Amazon. This inexpensive drone also offers numerous useful functions, but of course cannot compete with DJI’s higher-priced products. Nevertheless, the drone and the technology are impressive, especially for beginners. The functions include GPS support, return-to-home, automatic altitude hold, a follow-me mode and many more.

Toy and fun drones – fun for young and old

Many of the numerous toy and fun drones available are ideal for both children and adults. They are significantly smaller than their better-equipped counterparts, but are also a lot cheaper to buy. They are suitable for short flights indoors and outdoors. However, they are more suitable for indoor use as they lack the necessary technology to fly accurately even in windy weather conditions.

The advantage of these tiny devices is that they are virtually unrestricted due to their small size and weight, the lack of cameras and their short range. The recipient therefore has much less to worry about when flying.

However, no demands should be placed on the technology. It is clear that these drones differ significantly from the recommendations above and should not be compared with them under any circumstances.

You can find them for around €20 or more. Due to the large number of good mini drones, we can’t really name any specific examples here. That’s why we’re providing you with some inspiration here based on the Amazon Bestsellers 2023.

Responsible use of drones

A very important point at this point: Anyone who gives a drone as a gift, or receives a drone as a gift, should also handle it responsibly! In Germany, there are clear rules for the operation of drones of different equipment and sizes. These can be found in the EU Drone Regulation. These rules should and must be adhered to. This is the only way we can all work together to ensure that our favourite hobby is not perceived negatively by others. This is the only way we can prevent further restrictions.
